This page contains information about Western Districts Development Squad program.

These squads are selected each year following the attendance at trials by players nominated by their clubs and schools.

Squads are formed for Year 5/6 Boys & Girls, Year 7/8 Boys, U.15 Boys, U.17 Boys, U.14 Girls & Secondary school Girls.

The program is run by three convenors nominated for each squad by each of the principal clubs in Western Districts.

Convenors are responsible for arranging training venues and an appropriately qualified coach, organising any required equipment, communication with the particpants, setting a budget, obtaining quotes for each cost component and preparing a grant application to an appropriate organisation, arranging trial matches against suitable opposition, completing entries for age group tournaments and overseeing selection of teams in conjunction with the coach.

Each age group has a separate coach responsible for running the training sessions.

Grants are applied for to cover most of the training costs, although players are asked to make a nominal contribution.

At the end of the program, teams are selected to represent Western Districts at christmas age group tournaments. These are usually held prior to or just after Christmas.

While Year 5/6 teams do not participate in a tournament, one or two matches are arranged with other local associations.

WDSCA Development Squad Program

[1] WDSCA Winter Development Squad (WDS) Co-ordinator calls for nominations from the Principal Clubs for a coach from each club to act as one of three Convenors for each age group squad.

[2] WDSCA Management Committee confirm the nominations of Age Group Convenors advised to those convenors by the WDS Co-ordinator, setting out their duties and responsibilities.

[3] WDS Co-ordinator arranges for suitably qualified coaches from whom Age Group Convenors select to assist with trialing and selection of participants and running of coaching sessions. It is highly likely, but not necessarily, that these coaches will be those who fill the role of WDSCA nominees to the ACA Academy program.

[4] Age Group Convenors call for nominations for the respective Development Squads from Clubs & Schools. Depending on numbers of nominations received, these may be reduced to an acceptable number.

[5] WDS Co-ordinator arranges for trial venues, dates & times on behalf of the Age Group Co-ordinators, confirms these to the Age Group Convenors who in turn advise the trialists.

[6] Age Group Convenors advise dates, times, venue etc to boys & girls selected to trial.

[7] Age Group Convenors hold trials, following which they select the squad(s) for their respective age groups. Advise details to the WDS Co-ordinator. Advise both successful & unsuccessful trialists.

[8] Age Group Covenors establish their requirements regarding venues, times, equipment, prepare a budget, set a program and advise requirements to the WDS Co-ordinator.

[9] WDS Co-ordinator arranges a venue for training sessions and advises details to Age Group co-ordinators

[10] Age Group Covenors advise successful trialists of details of dates / times / venues and any other requirements such as dress.

[11] WDS Co-ordinator arranges any requirements such as balls & equipment required by the squads. Ensure details and invoives are passed on to the Treasurer.

[12] Sessions are held during the period June - September.
